It's not a bedroom at Graceland.
It's not the honeymoon suite at one of the Pocono Resorts.
It's not Liberace's guest room.
It's 207 Forest Hill Drive, in September of 1978, exactly thirty years ago. Gold shag carpeting, gold medallion wallpaper, quilted gold bedspread, and a tiny gold "boob" chandelier, dripping with fringe made of crystal.
Dad...Mama...thirty years ago this was super chic, I know. Thank God one of you had the presence of mind to photograph what I'm sure y'all thought was master bedroom decor worthy of Better Homes and Gardens.
Do you have to ask if this makes me happy? Yes. It does. Immensely.
Sometimes I miss the 70's so much that the craving for Tang only dissipates when I eat a cake made in my Easy Bake Oven. Er...that would be Libbey's Easy Bake Oven. Yeah.
Happy weekend, y'all...hope it's fun and funky!

That just SCREAMS 1970!
that is so awesome! Wow, and I remember we had all yellow appliances and yellow flooring as well as a burnt orange shag covering our living room and wood panel walls. Wow!
This made me happy too! I love it, it's so Mrs. Robinson era. I love the wallpaper, I love the bedspread and I love love love that they took a picture of it.
Have a great weekend!
you couldn't pay me enough to be 23 again....this was exactly **30** years ago. and wow. that is a lot of look.
I loved the 70's.
It kinda looks like a bedroom from Saddam Hussein palace. You know, like one of the ones from the picture slideshows that are floating around in the emails on the internets.
I thought it was picture from "Love, American Style." Oh where do I start..."boob" chandelier, Tang, or EAsy Bake Oven....Oh my goodness...That is hilarious...I can taste the half baked cake right now. What about The Brady Bunch, the Partridge Family, Nanny and The Professor and TV dinners??? All on a Friday night. Ya know, that bedspread ain't half bad. That wallpaper would give me the spins even if I hadn't had too much wine to drink...and that dresser just needs a coat of paint and some new pulls. ;) OH wait wait...I see something else!! A BLACK ROTARY PHONE on the edge of the dresser..bwahahahaha. OH and yes, I did enlarge the picture because it was too good not to.
Dang it, now I've got to run out and buy me some Tang and some cake mix for my easy bake, oh yeah, Abby's easy bake.
You are too funny.
If you put a quarter in the headboard, does it vibrate?
i just had to click over to see who Lula would be. I love your name and knew you had to be fun. I found you through a comment left on
Dawn's blog, whom I just recently found as well.
Love the bedroom. LOL, the thing is that bedroom was really classy back in da day. i'm from solomonsurprises.blogspot.com
#1 - Somwhere I have some pictures of a bathroom with all avacado green fixtures that would go REALLY well with that.
#2 - I love Tang. Especially hot tang.
#3 - I... um... threw Gert's easy bake oven away....
Seriously, I had green/orange/yellow swirl carpet in my bedroom, with a Jolly Green Giant bedcover and a Superfriends pillowcase back in 1978. And it was beautiful, and life was good. Thanks for the flashback.
Have a great weekend!
It's swellegant. Yep. I just made that word up.
At least its just a picture. Imagine moving into a house where the owner hasn't updated since 1976.
Yeah, it was so much fun tearing down that ugly ass wallpaper. ~sarcasm~
Leigh, I just gasped when I saw that picture! Yes, we thought it was lovely back in the day! You have made my day and I do not even know where you got that picture?? We were high styling then, huh?
Mom
Ummm... this is totally perfect.
If you change the color of the spread and draperies some people would consider it chic today.
If you ever get lonesome for yesteryear pull out that special decorating book an remember the Love Shack you recently lived in ;)
WOW, that is fierce! Thanks for the flashback!
We had a bright yellow shag carpet in our family room, and a blue one in the living room! I know, I know--go figure! What do you think we'll be saying about 2008 30 years from now? I'm sure fashion and thongs will be a centerpiece!
I think I would call it suttle but tastefully done. Thanks Lula's parents for taking this picture. It's awesome and oh so sunny & bright!!!!! I think I might go hula hoop and drink a Tab now.
Oh my gosh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So that's where all the magic happened. Hah!!Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, that's awesome. I love it!!! That bedroom just rocks. I love all the gold. What an awesome, awesome photo!!
I totally lived right down the street from Forest Hill Drive. Of course, I lived in Jackson, MS. So, probably not the same place.
I love this room! It's awesome!
Just the other night I was wondering if our children are going to make fun of us for our stainless steel appliances and granite countertops...
Oh my!! That room is hilarious!! Awesome! or would it be Far Out! (I dunno, people... I wasn't around then)
Great googly moogly, that is one wild bedroom. There is no detail missed: gold curtains, check, gold matching mirrors, check, giant clock radio, check. That room is stunning. Now I want to see pictures of the rest of the house because if this much effort went into the bedroom, I can't imagine the opulence of the living room!
Btw, I'm pretty sure we had that same carpet.
I don't know what to say. It's...um...yellow.
Straight off the set of That 70s Show (sorry, that's as close to the 70s as I can relate to).
I can't quit staring at the boob light .. I can't quit saying 'boob light' .. I love this room!
Oh wow, does that take me back! I swear we must have had the same carpet when I was a kid! Our wallpaper was different, though. Ours was more '70s avacado green. Except for one wall; it had those mirror squares with the gold marble veining. Ahh, those were the days!
What a RIOT!!! I love it!! Thanks so much for sharing - it was amazing what they got away with in the form of wallpapers then.
LOL that's just too much.
I actually kind of like it? Does that make me weird?! haha
That is awesome!!!
Classic vintage. Please tell me they've kept it through the years!! The 70's are back in a big way.
Oh.My.Gosh. I can just feel the bedspread, not comforter, BEDSPREAD. And I bet it got turned down at night too. You didn't sleep under it. How fabulous to have a photo of that and remember, that styles can come and (thankfully) go! Is your mom fussing at you for posting it?
ETA: I just read through the comments and see your mom has gotten a kick out of it. I loved Tang too, but give me a Tab to really throw me back!!
Oh that was one SWEET bedroom! That wallpaper would have given me a seizure I think, but boy was it sheek.
Mmmmmm ... Tang.
Oh, Lula, what can I say? That is the grooviest.
That reminds me of Mary Tyler Moore! I love it! We had the gold, stove, refrigerator and dishwasher! I believe it was called harvest gold and the green from the 70's was avocado green! And my girls poor bathroom still has that horrible green!
Any chance it still looks like that?
That is so groovy!
We had the same exact color gold in our LIVING ROOM, for goodness sakes.
OMG! Love it! You're parents were so POSH! LOL Have a great weekend!
I bought some Tang this week and have been drinking hot while I was sick. It is the BEST. All vitamin C-y and orange-y and caffeine free. So tasty.
I confessed my love for fictional people today on my blog. It's sad, I know. But I have always loved Chandler Bing, and I always will.
You know this was hippest, coolest bedroom in the neighborhood!!!
That is HIDEOUS! And I loved it!
I think my parents had similar style- only I am chanelling burnt orange and brown. And a water bed. OOH, there's a story I'll have to tell one day!
My parent's room looked exactly the same!
so did our kitchen, bathrooms and anywhere else that you could put up foil wallpaper and chintz fabric.
In the early 80's the folks went Oriental motif on us and we had brick red fabric colored walls and black leather table tops and lots of chotchke's from the far east.
This is awesome! When I was on my sister's vacation last weekend, I went around my grandpa's house and photographed every single room, including closets. He hasn't changed one thing since my grandma died 4.5 years ago. Her make up still sits on the counter. The thread she was sewing with the day before her passing sits next to the sewing machine. The books she was reading are in their place. It is a little weird, but at the same time comforting. No one had taken pics and it all a sudden occurred to me that I wanted to ALWAYS be able to remember the happiness I've felt in this house.
Ooo I love it! People pay high dollar to have their homes look like that NOW!
That is awesome!!!
My parents had some red and black wallpaper similar to that in their living room when I was little. I had a lot of ear infections which gave me vertigo....that wallpaper would make my head spin even more til I got sick!!! I still love looking at pictures of that time though...
Hold on a while and that will be in style again. Too funny.
Love the wallpaper, seriously, LOVE. IT.
Wow, that is quite a bedroom. Were thyey able to sleep in there?
Have to tell you....My kids got me The Host for my bday!! Now I will have to start reading again!
And only a bit more time for Twilight!
Goodness, I would sleep in that carmel goodness. Yes I would. I imagine that is hot Edwards eyes look when they are in their yellow form.
How did they fall asleep? Its so.... stimulating.
Wow. That IS totally '70's. Far out.
