Calico Devastation

It's such a small, simple thing, yet I treasure it as if it were made of Belleek China, crafted in Ireland. I don't know if my Aunt Mitzi purchased her at a grocery store, a kitschy gift shop, or the early 70's equivalent of Walmart. Maybe Aunt Mitzi received her as a gift. Costing all of a dollar, I'm certain, she's been used on a daily basis since I acquired her almost five years ago, taking her from her previous home in Indianapolis to our little mountain town here in Virginia.

So this morning, when she slipped from my fingers and shattered on the floor, you can imagine my shout of despair, followed by tears of sorrow. Libbey was barely able to finish her breakfast, as she repeatedly comforted, "It's OK Mommy...we can glue it back together...it will be fine."

Scott came running upon hearing my cries, thinking I'd cut myself, bleeding profusely.

No. It's just my heart. Bleeding on the inside.

I don't know how I can enjoy my morning cup of coffee without having her wholly with me. But I'll take what's left, because she's not only a constant reminder of my late aunt, but also the tiniest bit of joy in my daily routine.

Holly Hobbie, I love you. You are still the best spoon rest in the entire world. Please forgive me as I wipe these tears I've shed over your demise. Some might say you're only a possession...just a trinket amongst many. Be that as it may, you are also a member of our family...even slightly damaged.

Sniff-sniff.

*Please bear with me for a bit--as you can see, Lulaville has had a transformation!  There's some tweaking to be done (I love that word--"tweaking!"), clearly!

I had a Holly Hobbie doll when I was little; wonder what ever happened to her...

I can understand your sorrow; it's not the monetary value of such things, it's the memories they represent.

I've got some superglue, need some?

(I love that Libbey was there to comfort you; God love 'er)

Oh no! I'm so sorry for your loss. Hopefully glue can salvage some of it.

I had lots of Hollie Hobby stuff when I was little. The doll, the bed stuff, etc. Only freaky thing about her is that hidden face, that always sorta spooked me.

Sorry for your loss :(

Awe, you almost made me cry... thinking of my favorite Aunt. She's still with me, but if she weren't, I would surely die!

I'm sorry about your sweet spoon rest. Let Libby help you glue it. I'm sure she'll do a great job. :)

Look at you, your sweet rebellious self, changing it up on us with no warning!

I think I would have cried, too. And then gone looking for the super glue.

So sorry to hear about Holly Hobbie (she was a favorite childhood character of mine, along with Strawberry Shortcake and the Smurfs). Hopefully you can salvage something of the broken pieces.

Love the new layout, btw. :)

Why yes, I can imagine your shout of despair. Did it include any four letter words? Obviously children were present, so maybe not. I bet you cussed in your head though.

Sorry about Holly. She really is a treasure and nothing that a little love and superglue can't fix.

Oooh just look at your new digs. I like!

And don't get me started on poor poor Holly Hobbie!?! How could you be so careless??

Sigh.

I'm not helping. It will be ok...and I'll make it ok in Vegas. You know I will. Let the countdown begin.

Again.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!! I have seen many blog makeovers but for some reason yours shocks me so much. Maybe because I have been coming here everyday for almost a year and opening that page just always gave me this comfy feeling. And now it's something different. It's like when a best friend moves to a new house ya know. It's still beautiful and wonderful, just different the 1st time walking in the door. Hah.

And I am SO sorry about your precious piece breaking. I can only imagine how that hurts right when it happens. Like Libbey says, glue it.

I am so sorry for you loss. That is just terrible.

And just one more thing, since I am the mother of the boy for whom you are the president of the fan club shouldn't I been on your 'these are my people' list? Just wondering ;)

You crack me up. Crack up?! oh, good, lord, I've gone loopy.

LOVING the new design here. I'm about to change mine up too. Sick of the skinny cowgirl biotch...

I am in mourning with you.

Have you seen Holly Hobbie now? I am not a big fan of her makeover. No. No, I am not.

Uh, but I am a big fan of this new look! Love it!

I have a Holly Hobbie watch with a yellow plastic band. I keep it in my treasure box.

I think we have the same granite!

I am totally LOVING your new look! FAB-U-LOSITY!!!

Did you glue it back together??? *hugs*

Oooooo, I'm loving the makeover!

I am so sad about your spoon rest! Isn't it amazing the memories that lie within little inanimate objects? She'll have even more character once you glue her back together!!

Marrdy said...

Oh my, that takes me back to 1972. Loved Holly! I still have a few things too. I'm betting your Aunt got it at a Hallmark store. Those things didn't come in no old WalMart store.

Get some glue, I'm betting it will be fine.

Oh, and I will tell Alex you think he's going to take the spotlight from Zac Efron. He'll get the biggest head ever!

The new look ROCKS---soooo you!

I'm glad the best part of the spoon rest survived. I'm thinking mounted in that cool broken way in a shadow box.

Thanks to Leigh Anne's wonderful friend, Lacey, all is well. The Holly Hobby "trinket" has been replaced.

Lovin' the new look and lovin' Holly Hobby as well. What a throwback. Fortunately the spoon rest part didn't break. Ashlyn dropped and broke Reagan's little plate that she used as a baby. I cried as well and my children couldn't quite understand why Mommy was breaking down over a plate. At least Libbey understood :)

I'm so sorry about your spoon rest. I know how it is with things like that that we've loved for many many years!

I'm stunned by your new "look"! Shannon told me about it last week and I kept meaning to click over to check it out. Love it! I'm off to explore now.

I love the new blog look! It's all so well put together :)

Best of luck with the fine-tuning. Try not to let it take all the fun out of the wonderful, new layout (if I'm anything to go by, technicalities tend to do that...)

Oh and, I'm real sorry about Hollie. I can totally sympathize with just how much certain tiny things can come to mean to us, believe me...
