An Edict...

...just in time for the holidays...

Had I known this day was coming I'd have taken more time to prepare. Or prepare as much as possible for the inevitable, that is. I (wrongly) assumed this discussion was still a few years down the road. Nope. Not my child. My she's-not-even-seven-years-old-yet child.

Libbey: Mommy, I can't wear these big, high panties anymore.

Me: (looking at her pink Hanna Andersson panties, i.e. the best underwear in the world)
What do you mean, "big, high panties?"

Libbey: Well, they stick out of my jeans when they're high like this. I just want to wear my Jolly Roger ones from Old Navy. And I don't want to wear this big kind anymore. Or Gymboree clothes, because they're for little girls...you know?

Me: But those pink ones are so comfortable! I love comfortable panties. (So true!)

Libbey: Well, they are comfortable...but they just don't look very cute on my body.

And scene.

This past weekend I found 23 new gray hairs. Nothing surprises me anymore. Sigh...

well, the girls got a point.

i'm sorry.

my boy converted from cartoon briefs to boxers when he was 6.

i understand. kind of.

oh my! Well, at least the girl knows what she wants and is fashionably aware :)

sorry mom!

Shannon said...

Yep. I'm already there... oldest will be 8 in February. This past year she has refused, make that REFUSED, to wear anything from Gymboree or with a Disney Princess on it.

It happens so fast.

My kiddo has been wearing boxer briefs ever since I can remember. He didn't last long in the SpongeBob, Spider-Man, etc., draws.

Now, he informs me that he is a 'pre-teen'. Sigh. He's 10 going on 47.

wow, I only have young boys... but that is a bit amazing when you are raising little girls... wow. I bet you grew up 10 years just on that conversation.

OH LORD, PLEASE SAY IT AIN'T SO!!!!!!! I can hear it coming out of Abby- and early!
My girls are 6 1/2 and nearly 8- I dread the underwear talk.

But they both found the same tampon last week at different times and asked me what it was for- you know- they wanted details!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way, Miss Libbey, when your *ss gets as wide as mine you will be thanking the heavens for big panties. I'm just sayin'!

I love me so big ol comfy panties.

At least she didn't ask for a thong.

CaraBee said...

I'm with Tiffany. I swear I thought she was going to ask for a thong. THAT would be crazy. I just bought a half dozen new pairs of underwear last week that are bigger than my ginormous maternity underwear. I LOVE them.

I found one completely white hair last night. Sigh.

Oh no. She's talking changing panties, my boy turned 13 .,....gak...where is the time going?

Michelle said...

Oh girl, it is just the beginning. Wait 'til she starts getting PMS. That starts years before the real thing. (Then she will want the big comfy panties.)

Heather said...

Yep, I'm right there with you! I have been fighting with Isabel over clothes since she was 2. Always a definite opinion of what to wear, and she always wanted to wear summer clothes in the dead of winter. I would have to hide all her sleeveless shirts just to avoid the drama.

Go to the salon. Get some color. Cover those grays. Really, that's all you can do. Don't pluck them out or you'll be bald by the time she's 10.

Caroline said...

I have one question...okay maybe two.

Is she doing this because she wants to, or is she doing this because there has been lots of talk at school about "cool" underwear and clothes and she feels she needs to fit in?

and...Who does she think she needs to look cute in underwear for? She's beautiful just the way she is.

Libbey, just for the love of your mother and to save her natural hair color, just wear big girl panties till you're 18, m'kay?

I just bought Gert a 7 pack of bikini panties with the days of the week on them... Her butt DOES look cute in them, but I didn't tell her that. Well, i said she looked cute but not like she didn't look cute before.

Live.Love.Eat said...

Cute! And, uh, sorry :)

She's beautiful!!!!!

But remember last night, she wanted a tray like her little sister and cousin had! There is still some little girl in there!

April said...

Lula....nobody wants to wear those "BIG, HIGH PANTIES" anymore...not even Maggie Claire and she is 5!

(I had to give Anna Peyton the BIG GIRL TALK last week...just you wait!)

Heather said...

We have had that conversation twice already in my house. I feel better knowing that my girls aren't the only ones adverse to granny panties. I was starting to get worried!

Kori said...

WOW.

Jacob went from white tighties to boxer briefs at the age of 7 and Calob was 5 but had to follow suit.

Too funny.

Jen said...

Tell her this, in a few years she is going to wishing for those comfy panties once again and you are just helping her skip all the uncomfortableness of the 'girly' panties.

Mama Dawg said...

Oh, it just gets worse. Mine refuses to have anything above her belly button. That includes panties and pants. If the tops come above her belly button, she rolls it down.

Keys to the Magic Travel said...

I haven't had the request for no granny panties. But I am truly lamenting that I cannot buy Gymboree clothes for Katie. Gymboree needs a tween line :-)

Now, when I try to suggest that they wear matching clothes, I get all sorts of retorts about how it's their clothes and their body...

Nicole said...

Once again thank goodness I have boys! I don't think I could hadle that situation. I am so sorry!

Amy said...

Get ready girl. I have an almost 12 year old and an almost 9 year old and the innocence leaves them Eeearrly these days. *sigh*

Melissa said...

Lauren won't wear panties without ponies on them. You think you got problems???:)
Emmy's hiney will probably never fit into bikini's. Does J-Lo have a children's line of panties? I'll google and get back to ya.

Jenny and the Princess Peonies said...

Oh man! I feel your pain. My not yet 7 year old hasn't wanted anything from Gymboree since she was 4. And she loves the panties at Target "because they have cute designs Mommy".

At our house it is all about Justice. "The monkey store". Since Ash is "all about monkeys".

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!

Brandy said...

Oh poor thing. I wish I could say it gets better but since I have one teen and one adult (OMG she's really an adult! Sorta.) I can tell you it doesn't. Especially with girls.

Poor thing. I wish you luck. And don't be surprised when it's thongs and push up bras they are asking for. Ugh.

Tori said...

While I don't completely understand since I have boys, one of whom has been in boxer briefs since he started wearing underwear, I can completely relate to the no more Gymboree clothes statement. Alex insisted upon picking out his own winter clothes this year. He wouldn't even wear any of the shirts that I bought for him... at least until he picked some out on his own and they all got mixed together.

Britt said...

Walking through the little girl section .. I see an itty bitty bra .. with an itty bitty underwire.

Gah!

Sorry mama :-(
kinda makes you wonder if grannies are even wearing granny panties anymore?

Never mind .. I did NOT want that visual. Oy

I'm sure none of those gray hairs came from daughter, right? :)

At least she wasn't asking for a thong!

Goodbye 'high panties' hello hip huggers and cammies.

My 9 year old said goodbye to 'high panties' a few years ago.

Hanes girls 'no tag, no seams, no riders' are the undies for us!

Carrie said...

Big.high.panties! *snort*

I agree with her! I tease about wearing them, but I can't STAND panties that touch my bellybutton. blech!!

Bring on the hipsters!!!

Ash said...

Oh. Wow.

I think I sprouted a gray hair for you.

Em

Becky said...

The above commentor is right! (about thongs) Tatum (who is 15) had informmed me that she wants to wear only thongs now.

Yea, not happening

Ashley said...

Wow! Growing up fast!

Rhea said...

Woa, Lula, she's growing WAY TOO FAST! Stop her now!! She's beautiful though. And adorable.

Ah, you are lucky. My convo with my 8-yr-old-in-Jan started off with "mom, is SEX a bad word?". Nobody told me about this stage in parenting. I wanna quit.

Susie said...

LOL... just wait until she is 13... That's all I have to say, I won't spoil the fun for you.

Anonymous said...

Dear Lord. I have sprouted gray hair on your behalf. I have to agree with the other ladies though, at least it wasn't a thong request. ; )

I must add: she is stunning. Gorgeous.

I thought the day that you never thought you would see come was a loss to Tech. Ooopsss...sorry I mentioned it.

Claremont First Ward said...

I'm just glad to hear she wasn't asking for a thong. :)

ParentingPink said...

Oh, those cotton panties are so comfortable - I can't wait for my girls to reach the "I want to wear skimpy underwear" stage. My 5 year old is already beginning to reject Gymboree clothes (sigh, I love their cute matching lines).

And the Bulldogs AND Wahoos loosing Saturday falls into the category of a national tragedy. LOL Hubby and I were devastated, but alas, there is always next year to fry up some yummy Hokie turkey!

Stephanie Wetzel said...

First, she is totally beautiful. What a sweet face.

Second, I agree with a lot of the other comments: glad it wasn't a thong request.

My 6yo still wears cartoon undies, but it's only a matter of time. My 9yo has told me she thinks patterned undies are babyish. So she wants solids. Fortunately for her, *I* don't like granny panties, so I've bought her the little Old Navy ones for awhile.

Good luck! Sounds like yours might have some strong opinions. ;)

I'm sorry but that was the most hysterical thing I have heard today.. so cute! and SOOOO LIBBEY! I can hear her..(accent and all). I read it to Lee and all he said was, "UH UH"...

ha.

I dread this day. And, Hannah Anderson panties? I didn't know they sold those. We're the WalMart brand here, with princesses all over them. She has started telling me she doesn't want to wear bows in her hair. I still make her for church or other occassions...
Wwwaaaahhhhh!!!!

Gee whiz, I am so NOT looking forward to these days. The adventures of having little girls. Sigh.

Maddness of Me said...

Oh.you.just.wait.

Mine is 10. I have decided that 10 is the new 30.

She asked to go see Twilight with me. Riiiight.

I caught her trying on stilleto's at Steve Madden the other day when I took her with me.

She found a way to sneak herself to the store with a friend and get her ears DOUBLE PIERCED.

Despite the fact that I have threatened bodily harm, I still keep finding makeup hidden in her room.

Don't get your daughter a padded training bra when she is ready for a training bra. As a matter of fact, go for the pull over athletic kind. Otherwise, she will get some attention and might possibly get talked into putting one of said padded bras in a boy's locker. I'm just sayin.

I had almost that very same conversation with my daughter .. except we were in Rue21 with her waving around a red lace thong that she wanted me to buy *facepalms* yay me!
