I'm feeling full of girl power today (and yes--I loved the Spice Girls--no hating on me, please!), so it's quite necessary to share with y'all some of my favorite female artists. I adore musicians such as Alison Krauss, Patsy Cline and Ann Wilson (of Heart). Their voices are some of my most favorite in the world of music. And if I could sing like Amy Lee (of Evanescence), you'd never be able to cease my lyrical stylings.
Today, though, I wanted to mention a few of my favorites that are lesser-known. Maybe the fact that these gals aren't touring 50,000 seat venues is what lends to their charm. Be they famous, though wildly or mildly, I care less. I just wanna hear good music, y'all.
"Sway," by Bic Runga
I first heard "Sway" in the movie American Pie (cringe--I know!), and immediately grabbed (stole?) the song off Napster. Remember Napster? That time seems like ages ago. I've been a fan of Bic Runga's ever since...her voice is mesmerizing.
"Breathe Me," by Sia.
Ever heard the fabulous song "In the Waiting Line" by Zero 7? It's on my list of most favorites. Sia Furler used to be a member of Zero 7, before going out on her own. To my ears, her magical voice sounds rather celestial.
"Your Song," by Kate Walsh.
Oh, how I adore Kate Walsh. A British export, her album "Tim's House" is usually played in Lula's house at least twice a week. Why she isn't a household name is beyond me.
Finally, I'm unable to post a video (darn those artists' licensing rights!), but this voice is so amazing it's worth a listen. Click here, and enjoy the perfection that was October Project. They've been disbanded for years, but I've remained a fan. Mary Fahl is brilliant...I would listen to her sing the phone book if she offered.
Spread some girl power! And aren't y'all glad I didn't link the Spice Girls here? As always, I try to take care of my peeps!

Go, girl power! you rock, Lula!
Great picks! You have great taste in music. I never knew who did that song from American Pie but I always liked it.
Love your musical days. I'm going to download them. I'm down to about 100 pages, trying to make it last.
You love Patsy Cline?
OMG, we were so sisters in another life!
Did you ever watch the movie about her life, "Sweet Dreams"?
My dad and I would watch that movie, then sit on the floor and listen to all his 45's on our turntable. He was always amazed at my love for "his" music, from an early age.
I heart Patsy!
nice selection of songs. I was not familiar w/them, but I enjoyed listening to them. See ya soon!
Mom
Great music pics. I love "Sway" by Bic Runga. Keep them coming!!!!
Allison Krauss is the bomb! Wish I looked like her and had her voice!
Since we are sharing, I forgot to leave my musical confession. I love Britney Spears music. Yes, I have said it out loud. Don't hate participate!!!
Oh Lula, you always know just what to say :)
I seriously need to get to updating my zen... my music is sadly behind :(
Your choices for today are nothing less than.....choice. I love all of these songs.
Your song by Kate Walsh sounds like it could be in some love story about a vampire and a human....it's that sweet. Wouldn't that be inventive???? :) Yes, I'm a dork like that.
Her voice is so soothing.
Excellent work, my dear.
I love the SIA song!! And I love your background!! Cute. I saw your comment on Sidz Kids blog and had to come see the Pee Wee video and I read thru this post and the Twilight one. My sister read the whole series in 1 week. And she is hooked. I guess I need to read these books, everyone is making a huge deal of it.
Well, this is a brilliant post! There is some music here that I have not been aware of. Off to iTunes!!
Thanks for stopping by & I'm glad you liked the Louisiana post! I forgive you for the Georgia stuff - I was actually born there and still have lots of family there. I think my mom still secretly cheers for the bulldogs!
Tina Turner may be really famous but honestly she is my favorite. I love to see older people still out enjoying life. it's so inspirational.
Me likey Kate Walsh. Very nice. You might like Maire Brennan. I think she's Enya's sister. They both have brilliant pipes. And my recent favorite: Emiliana Torrini.
Mary Chapin Carpenter needs to be on the Girl Power list, too! The Wild One loves the Spice Girls. I just don't get it. But, as we all know, I'm a slow learner. On my 2nd Twilighter now, BTW!
Lula- I love that you come visit me everyday...but I don't know to tell you this -
my name is not debbie.
You can call me ray, or you can call me jay - just don't call me late for dinner.
My non-bloggy name Wendy.
Never heard of these girls. Particularly like the last one, Kate Walsh. Now, I remember, you're my fellow Ann Wilson, Heart-lover.
Didn't know anything about the JLo photos. I'll have to look that one up.
I want to sing like Amy Lee. I like to pretend. But I have to listen to my children yelling for me to be quiet when I do. Here's one for you to check out (if you aren't familiar already): Neko Case.
And you know what? Napster is still around. Michael has a monthly music subscription through them...
There is NOTHING wrong wi the spice girls!
Oooohhhh Yeeaaahhhh....
You are now an honoury Kiwi and my new BFF!!!
You also have the honour of being the first American that I've met who knows who Bic Runga is!!! She rocks!!! :-)
I mentioned liking Bic Runga to an American friend once, and she asked if it was a new type of lighter!!!
Great tunes chicky! And here's a quick conversation between my hubby & I from the other day.
Him: Are you aware that there's a Spice Girls cd in your car?
Me: Yes.
Him: And you aren't alarmed by this.
Me: Bite me.
Girl power unite!
Thanks for that! I love having my musical eyes opened .. also known as my ears?
Hate? For loving the Spice Girls? No way! They still get played at this house .. my hubs even likes them. Shake it to the Right!
